Interview: Missy Suicide and SuicideGirls: Blackheart Burlesque Tour

SuicideGirls-Blackheart-Burlesque-2014

Missy Suicide, the co-founder of SuicideGirls, has seen her venture grow by leaps and bounds to become a part of the pop culture. It all began as what seemed like a lark in 2001 to become a new generation’s answer to Playboy Magazine. If you are into alternative beauty, then SuicideGirls answers that call. In my interview, Missy speaks to what SuicideGirls is all about. For anyone who wonders if SG has its comics cred in order, I would direct you to the SG website and check out the online community discussions. Everything from vegan cooking to manga is up for grabs. You will also want to check out the latest SG book, “Geekology,” which you can find here.

Are there still misconceptions about what a Suicide Girl is? Sure, but all it takes is digging a little deeper. “Suicide Girls are thought to be these wild girls. But they’re every type of girl. They’re doctors and lawyers and mothers and everything in between,” says Missy. As the site took on a life of its own, the concept sprung from the name: Here are girls who are thought to be committing cultural suicide! Flash forward to 2014, and it seems that a lot of people are catching up and embracing the Suicide Girl vision: It’s great to be different. You can flaunt it too, if you like. Apparently, a lot of women out there would love to join in with 1,000 submissions to SuicideGirls each week.

The current SuicideGirls: Blackheart Burlesque Tour, presented by Inked, crisscrosses all over the United States. Tonight it’s Lawrence, Kansas. Missy assures us that the show will satisfy many a comics fan. Her favorite segment pays tribute to Adventure Time. Really? That I have to see.
