COMIC-CON 2011 Memo #10: The Walking Dead

“The Walking Dead” has won the hearts and souls, if not the flesh, of Comic-Con fans, detached observers and the media. Whitney Matheson of USA Today’s Pop Candy gives it the official thumbs up in her recap of Comic-Con 2011:

The Walking Dead is more lively than ever. If I had any doubts about Dead‘s staying power, I don’t anymore. The show attracted a multitude of zombie fanatics to its panel and booth, where there was a permanent traffic jam. Creator Robert Kirkman has become a bona fide superstar.

COMIC-CON 2011 Memo #7: Jeffrey Brown

It was at Comic-Con that news of a movie based on the work of cartoonist Jeffrey Brown has caught on.

Well, it won’t be another “Scott Pilgrim” as far as having a studio spend $60 million only to make $30 million at the box office.

This is the logline for “Save the Date”: “a comedy centered on two very different sisters.” That seems to add up to, from what I can tell, an indie movie with an indie budget and perhaps aspirations to being a new generation’s answer to the Woody Allen classic, “Hannah and Her Sisters,” a comedy-drama centered on three very different sisters. Well, maybe something sort of like that.

It is really cool to see this come about. “Save The Date” stars Lizzy Caplan (“Cloverfield”) and Alison Brie (“Mad Men”).

COMIC-CON 2011 Memo #6: Carey Mulligan

“DRIVE” is another hot movie that was promoted with style at Comic-Con. Carey Mulligan is definitely one very good reason to see it. All the stars from the flick came out to party and give back some Hollywood magic to the fans.

Film District pulled out the stops with a swank Comic-Con party:

“DRIVE” speeds into theaters September 16.

You can see the trailer here.

COMIC-CON 2011 Memo #5: Trickster

Heidi MacDonald brought this news to the world about a cool thing going on right outside of Comic-Con and it is not promoting a movie or TV show:

The big news outside the convention center was the soft opening for Tr!ckster, the comics-themed offsite event, showcasing independent comics creators. While it was still evolving — prints and posters set up in front of industrial sized stoves — the wares on display look sharp.

The life drawing classes — led by two gorgeous models — were well attended, and the bar got a shake-down cruise. As Tr!ckster is held inside the San Diego Wine and Culinary Center, the wines are quality — we enjoyed a stunning dry rose from the south of Italy last night.

Show runner Scott Morse was running around seeing to last-minute details, but the response from everyone there was excitement. “This is going to be the hit of the show,” predicted Jimmy Palmiotti.

COMIC-CON 2011 Memo # 4: J.J. Abrams

TV is king at Comic-Con and who better to lead the way than Mr. J. J. Abrams and his latest project. This is another helpful memo for myself, and hopefully for you as well.

“ALCATRAZ” will star Sarah Jones and Jorge GarciaBad Robot Productions produced the pilot episode, which is based on a screenplay by Elizabeth Sarnoff, Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt. The series was officially picked up by Fox on May 10, 2011. It is currently planned as a midseason replacement to air on Mondays at 9 pm in 2012.

COMIC-CON 2011 Memo #3: CAPTAIN AMERICA

While “CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER” did not premiere at Comic-Con, which would have been pretty cool but perhaps overwhelming, it did have special screenings at Comic-Con which included a performance by a group of USO-style chorus girls and an appearance by Chris Evans.

Here is Robert Downey Jr. at the LA premiere of “CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER” on July 20. Asked to speak about Chris Evans, of course, Mr. Downey Jr has good things to say.

Check out my review of “CAPTAIN AMERICAN: THE FIRST AVENGER,” over with our friends at GeekWeek.

COMIC-CON 2011 Memo #2: Sarah Michelle Gellar

What better way to enjoy Comic-Con than to know that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in the house.

The CW’s “Ringer” has all the quality and spooky goodness that will serve Sarah Michelle Gellar fans very well. The story of two sisters, both with secrets to hide, both in danger of losing everything, one can easily consume the other. You can see the trailer here.

“Ringer” premieres Tuesday, September 13, 9/8c on the CW y’all.

COMIC-CON 2011 Memo #1: Emelia Clarke

I will list a bunch of good reasons to love and appreciate Comic-Con. We can start here.

Emelia Clarke plays Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” set in medieval times, based on the popular fantasy novel by George R. R. Martin. It seems to be hitting its stride and Comic-Con will help give it a boost.

You can see a profile of Emelia’s character in “Game of Thrones” here.
