The name of Fred Van Lente means action, fun, and adventure! This has been the case since Van Lente first teamed up with artist Ryan Dunlavey on “Action Philosophers.” It’s been a whirlwind ride from then on with Marvel Zombies and, more recently, with “Brain Boy” and “Project Black Sky” at Dark Horse Comics. And now, we have yet another intriguing Dark Horse Comics title, “Resurrectionists.” Details follow:

Interview: Ken Pisani and ‘Colonus’
Ken Pisani has always been balancing a number of interesting things. Right now, there is a focus on “Colonus,” a sci-fi dystopian work that will appear in Dark Horse Comics Presents and subsequently be published as a graphic novel by Dark Horse Comics. As Pisani explains, this is a story of what happens when the bad guys go after the even badder guys!
As you will see when you check out the 8-page opener, “Colonus” is set on Mars and Venus, after the demise of Earth. The elite made it to Mars. Everyone else made it to Venus. Somewhere along the line, Mars got dumped on by its inhabitants to the point where Venus started to look good. And, to the credit of the crew on Venus, they created something remarkable through their blood, sweat, and tears. Are they going to let the new Martians take over their new Venus? Not very likely! Check out the opener here.
Review: COLONUS #1 by Ken Pisani and Arturo Lauria
So, let’s go back a bit to that placement of a specific comic book on the hit TV show, “The Big Bang Theory.” That would be the episode where the guys are trying to buy tickets to go to Comic-Con International in San Diego. In “The Convention Conundrum,” broadcast January 30, 2014, we see Simon Helberg thumbing through the pages of a copy of “Colonus.”

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON 10 #1 Review
Welcome back to the Buffyverse! Dark Horse Comics launches Season 10 today. Without a doubt, this is a high point. So, without further ado, let’s take a look. New Rules. New Rules. That’s the name of the game and the name of this first new story arc. Buffy back to basics, fighting vampires. First off, Executive Producer: Joss Whedon; Writer: Christos Gage; Editor: Scott Allie; Artist: Rebekah Isaacs; Colorist: Dan Jackson; Cover Artist: Steve Morris. Everyone accounted for. And the very same can be said for Buffy. She can count on Xander, Willow, and Spike. Heck, we even have magic back. So, what’s a girl to do when everything seems to be going her way? Or is it?

Review: THE WITCHER #1
Paul Tobin is a very thoughtful writer and that’s what makes for immersive work like, “The Witcher,” his latest comic with Dark Horse Comics. Tobin is a seasoned pro who has written for all the great superheroes. He has a keen mind that likes to play so it makes sense he’d want to see what happens when you set a story in the Middle Ages and throw together the fates of a warlock and a hunter.

Review: VEIL #1
This comic lifts off the page like a dream, or nightmare, with ease and simplicity. We get down to basics. Our character is of few words and not much of anything else. In fact, Veil is off on the wrong foot, it would first seem, completely naked and padding about for all to see as a sex object. But for this story to work, she must be this sort of empty vessel awaiting further instruction. She is definitely more than she may seem. She may not even be from this planet. All we really know is she’s downright spooky and befriended by sewer rats before she embarks up some subway steps and stumbles upon lowlifes.

Review: Aron Warner’s PARIAH #1
We’ve all seen, or know something about “Gravity,” starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, right? We appreciate that getting lost in space is not a very good idea. Imagine if you’re a goofy teenager thrown in with a bunch of other teens in some space station that has apparently lost its way and is just drifting out in space. That’s what we first see in this new comic, “Pariah,” story by Aron Warner and Philip Gelatt, art and lettering by Brett Weldele, published by Dark Horse Comics. There’s not even a hint of the glamour of Bullock and Clooney, not by a long shot. This is gritty, sweaty, stuff, more like “Lord of the Flies.”

Review: DARK HORSE PRESENTS #33
Another awesome issue of the celebrated, and critically acclaimed, Dark Horse Presents is out. In Issue 33, we kick off with the first chapter to “Cruel Biology,” written by Christopher Sebela, drawn by Brian Churilla, with colors by Dave Stewart. It’s an 8-page beauty of an opener set during WW II on a isolated little South Pacific island. The three main characters have been deemed by Uncle Sam to be “undesirable but useful.” The narrator, Private O’Brien, would just as soon tip back a few cold ones. PFC Zimmerman attempts to maintain order. Captain Curtis is a medic who has been left broken from his tour in Italy. All three guys don’t expect much from their current tour in the middle of nowhere until, one day, a strange item hitched to a balloon comes in for a landing.

Review: Gustavo Duarte’s Monsters! & Other Stories
Dark Horse Comics has unleashed quite a monster with this collection of work by Gustavo Duarte. But it’s not just monsters. It’s chickens, pigs, birds, a whole wacky and, quite enthralling, world.
Guatavo Duarte is a new talent with an old soul. As Sergio Aragonés makes clear in the introduction to this book, Duarte has hit the ground running in wordless comics. He is very much in the traditon of the greats, from Otto Soglow to Jim Woodring. Duarte’s comics are truly electric. There’s a live wire quality to them that is complimented by its clean refinement. While very smooth and polished, you get that sensation of a rapidly moving line.

Comics in 2014: Dark Horse Comics and Star Wars Comics Franchise
This will most likely be the last year that Dark Horse Comics is at the helm of the Star Wars comics franchise. There’s no doubt that Dark Horse will make the most of 2014. But you would think that perhaps Disney could still work with Dark Horse considering how well Dark Horse has managed Star Wars comics.
